NUR 532 Healthcare Policy, Law, & Ethics

Surveys the legal environment within which healthcare is provided, with emphasis on the tensions and trade-offs between quality and cost. Provides an in-depth view of specific laws, regulations, and policies that influence nurse leadership. Uses case law, statutory and regulatory analysis, and trends in health law to highlight the legal relationships and obligations of physicians, personnel, patients and healthcare institutions. Topics include access to health care, antitrust law, personnel licensure, institutional accreditation, documentation, malpractice, professional and institutional liability, cost containment regulation, and cost controls in government programs. Also discusses the philosophical and managerial implications of ethical issues including: resource allocation, impaired professionals, end-of-life decision-making, research, experimentation, and biotechnology. Learners will have the opportunity to apply this knowledge in a practice setting.
